10 Foods That Fight Inflammation

Homer's Recipies

1. Extra-virgin olive oil – an unrefined type of olive oil – contains a substance called oleocanthol that interferes with two enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) involved with inflammation in the body. In fact, a 2005 study in the journal Nature found that oleocanthol inhibits inflammation in a way that’s identical to the painkiller ibuprofen.

2. Red wine contains a compound called resveratrol, which has been found to have both anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Scientists say the presence of this compound may help explain the so-called “French paradox” as to why the French –who drink red wine with most meals – can eat a diet that’s actually quite high in saturated fats and yet have healthy arteries and hearts.

Comment: Generally true but for MSers alcohol could be more harmful than resveratrol’s benefit. A very good quality organic wine can accompany meat but no more than a small glass and not in dily basis. If you want to try resveratrol try a good natural supplement.

3. Tea. Generally, any beverage that is high in water content will have anti-inflammatory qualities, and tea is a great choice. Teas such as white tea, oolong, and green tea are full of catechins, antioxidant compounds that reduce artery plaque and inflammation. Tea also has been linked to reduced risks of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Comment: Generally true. For MS you must keep in mind that green tea also contains caffeine which is not good for your central nervous system. Green tea though contains EGCG a major catehin to help discard iron overload (Helps MSers diagnosed with CCSVI). The best way to get it is with supplementing with a non caffeine product. Herbs are good depending on each occasion. You should not take them all the time and you should definitely change between one another.

4. Grass-Fed Beef. If you’re eating beef that’s not specifically sold as “grass-fed,” it means the cows were fed a high-calorie diet of corn and grain in an effort to fatten them quickly. Corn and grain are full of omega-6 fatty acids, which have been linked to inflammation. Grass-fed cows are leaner, and their meat is rich in healthy compounds such as omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E.

Comment: True. Besides that more than 90% of corn today is mutated. For MS meat protein is irreplaceable. You should try different choices (best choices are rabbit, turkey, goat, grass-fed beef – not a very good choice is chicken, unless it is organic and completely avoid pork). Always combine your meat with fresh vegetables and olive oil. Don’t eat the same meat every day.

5. Oily Fish. You’ve probably seen bottles of fish oil supplements in your pharmacy or grocery store, but you can get the same healthy boost from going straight to the source, as well. Oily fish such as salmon, sardines, and tuna are fish that have fatty oils throughout the fillets and in the area around the gut, rather than just in just the liver. Experts say eating one to two servings of these fish per week can reduce inflammation and also decrease your risk for heart disease and sudden death.

Comment: Sea is daily polluted with tons of chemicals and toxic waste. So big fish are usually much more overloaded with poisons. You should always prefer small fish (anchovy, fry, sardines etc). Swordfish, salmon and tuna are famous for their accumulation of mercury (very toxic heavy metal) especially from the atlantic and indic ocean. Avoid them! Also avoid any kind of canned fish.
It is true that food would and especially fish could be a very good source of essential fatty acids. This tends to be history. Be sure you find a very good source (pharmaceutical grade) Fish Oil. I prefer this one which tastes great.

6. Cocoa contains anti-inflammatory compounds called flavanols, substances that reduce both blood clotting and inflammation in the body. Enjoying a cup or two of hot cocoa per week can help reduce inflammation, particularly if it’s made with skim or low-fat milk to keep down the drink’s content of saturated fats. Keep in mind, however, that trying to get your cocoa in the form of candy will load you up on saturated fats.

Comment: 100% true. Prefer organic cocoa and you can drink it more often than twice a week. Of course do not add any sugar or sweeteners.

7. Cranberries are a powerhouse food, with studies linking the red berry to such benefits as inhibiting cancerous tumors and lowering bad (LDL) cholesterol. Scientists say the fact that the berries are rich in anti-inflammatory antioxidants contribute to their healthful effects. As a bonus, cranberries also contain tannins, substances that can act as a natural antibacterial agent to fight urinary tract and E. coli infections.

8. Grapes. A 2004 study in the medical journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology found that people with stable coronary disease lowered the amount of inflammatory markers in their blood by drinking Concord grape juice. This finding was likely due to the presence of resveratrol in the grapes’ skins, which inhibits inflammation and may even help to fight cancer. Eating grapes – and not drinking them – also adds fiber to the grapes’ benefits and eliminates any added sugar.

Comment: This may be true but grapes have a very high glycemic load. That is why they taste so sweet. In my opinion in MS anything which tastes sweet should be avoided or completely removed from diet (such sugar, candys etc). Grapes contain a very powerful antioxidant, resveratrol, which was mentioned in red wine. I must repeat that resveratrol is best taken from a good quality supplement.

9. Walnuts contain the “plant version” of omega-3 fatty acids, a substance known as ALA, which reduces inflammation in the body. In a 2004 study published in the Journal of Nutrition, scientists found that people who ate at least 2.3 ounces of walnuts and flaxseed (which also contains ALA) daily had reduced levels of inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP), a major indicator of a person’s risk for heart disease.

Comment: True, but don’t forget that many people could be allergic or intolerant to walnus which is very common. In that case they should be avoided for sure. Nuts generally is a good source os essential fatty acids and vitamins. You should not though consume it in high quantities or try to replace Fish Oil with them. ALA can be obtained from other sources as well like flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed oil, perilla seed oil, tofu, animal organs, eggs etc .

10. Broccoli is a virtual disease fighter, rich in such healthy compounds as beta-carotene, vitamin B folate, vitamin C, and the inflammation-fighting flavanoid kaempferol. Broccoli also contains sulforaphane, which experts say helps the body cleanse itself of cancer-causing compounds.

Dr. F.R. Klenner’s Protocol for MS

Since the publication of my article “Multiple Sclerosis Treated with Injectable Vitamin B1 and Liver Extract” in the TLfDP in the Feb/March 2000 issue, I have received hundreds of calls from doctors and patients wanting more information on this safe, effective, and inexpensive treatment which reverses and curses Multiple Sclerosis.

Dr. F.R. Klenner’s medical paper was published in the June and July 2000 edition of the TLfDP. Dr. H.T.R. Mount’s medical paper on the successful treatment of MS with vitamin B1 and liver extract was also published in the Feb/March 2000 issue of the TLfDP. It is interesting to note these two MDs were treating MS in the 1940s and ‘50s with the same two essential ingredients – injectable B1 and liver extract, yet they were unaware of each other.

Dr. Klenner in Reidsville, North Carolina and Dr. Mount in Ottawa, Ontario. Dr. Mount felt paralysis was a contraindication to his type of therapy, whereas Dr. Klenner was treating MS patients with paralysis intensively and successfully with vitamins A, C, E and all of the B vitamins and other metabolites in addition to the vitamin B1 and liver extract injections.

As many readers know, we had serious problems from 1998 on as the FDA Pharmaceutical monolith attempted to stop this treatment by refusing to allow the release of vitamin injectables and liver extract from the large labs producing them, which were under FDA control. It was a desperate situation for us and we survived by importing them from Mexico where these injectables are available without a prescription. Compounding pharmacies in the US began to produce the vitamin B1 injectables in 2000. They were able to do this because compounding pharmacies are under State control. The FDA went to court in January 2001 in New York and attempted to gain control of compounding pharmacies and they were denied that right. These pharmacies then began to produce Liver Extract also and we were assured of a reliable source of supply.

There are currently two pharmacies producing B1, 200mg per ml. and liver extract with two more coming on line, one in Canada and one in the US. With increasing numbers of patients becoming aware of this treatment, the demand will increase.

Dr. Klenner believed MS to have a viral cause. With a degree in Biochemistry he was able to understand what was happening in MS. The virus damaged the cells of the central nervous system rendering them incapable of maintaining homeostasis or normal metabolism by retaining adequate B1 within the cells, resulting in a deterioration of the myelin sheath surrounding the nerve and eventual paralysis. By raising the level of B1 in the body with a daily injection, a level could be maintained allowing normal metabolism to be continued, resulting in myelin sheath regeneration and recovery. In reality, MS is a deficiency disease caused by a viral inflammation of the central nervous system which can be reversed with adequate B1 and liver extract injections. Recovery can be enhanced with the addition of vitamins A, C, E, and B-complex and other metabolites in addition to a healthful diet and lifestyle.

I have followed this protocol for over 25 years. Following two severe attacks of MS in 1973 I could walk only a short distance and was forced to discontinue working – my doctors said I would be in a wheelchair soon. After beginning treatment with Dr. Klenner I was able to return to work within 6 months – but it was two years before I became symptom-free. I have enjoyed excellent health since.
The protocol of Dr. Klenner’s I have followed consists of:

(1) a daily intramuscular injection of vitamin B1 of 300 to 400 mg. The correct dosage can be determined by the level of fatigue the patient experiences. Some patients require 300 to 400 mg daily to experience relief of fatigue symptoms. The B1 is available in a strength of 200mg per ml. So a 200mg injection would be 1cc. Twice weekly 1cc of liver extract is added to the B1 injection so extra injections aren’t needed. The B1 injectable comes in a 30cc bottle and lasts for two to four weeks. The liver extract comes in a 10cc vial and lasts 5 weeks. The syringe is a 25 gauge by five-eights inch 3cc syringe.

Note: B1 is not well absorbed in oral form – the daily injection is required for life for successful treatment and recovery.

Oral Vitamin Regimen

1. 5 grams daily in divided doses of Calcium Ascorbate (buffered Vitamin C) which is available in 500 tablets. This boosts the immune system and eliminates or shortens recovery time from colds and flu.

2. Vitamin E 400 to 1000 IU daily

3. B-100 tablet. This tablet contains 100mg of all the B vitamins.

4. B12 – One tablet (sublingual – dissolved under the tongue) daily. One to 2mg strength.

5. Niacin. Once or twice weekly, 100 to 300mg before breakfast. This is a vasodilator and opens the blood vessels allowing the nutrients to rebuild the myelin sheath damaged by MS. This will produce a flush and reddening of the skin for about 30 minutes, which most patients say they enjoy. It is advisable to lie down and cover up for the period of the flush.

A high protein diet is required to rebuild the myelin sheath. Examples: Breakfast – 1 or 2 eggs poached, with fruit and cereal. Lunch – fish and vegetables (steamed) and fruit. Supper – chicken or beef with vegetables and fruit. Soy, cheese and dairy products are a good source of protein if well tolerated.
One 500mg digestive enzyme tablet taken with each meal can often improve digestion and absorption.
Injectables are presently available at two compounding pharmacies with a prescription and are shipped to Canada and all parts of the US: The Compounder Pharmacy, Aurora, Illinois 630-859-0333 or 800-679-4667. Prices at last quote: Thiamine 200mg per ml. 30cc $19.00; Liver

Στο Τεύχος Ιουνίου/Ιουλίου 2000 του Towsend Letter for Doctorsand Patients δημοσιεύτηκε το ιατρικό άρθρο του Dr. F.R. Klenner. Στο Τεύχος Φεβρουαρίου/Μαρτίου 2000 τουTowsend Letter for Doctors and Patients δημοσιεύτηκε επίσης το ιατρικό άρθρο του Dr. H.T.R.

The Compounder Pharmacy, Aurora, Illinois 630-859-0333 or 800-679-4667.

Drugs and MS: A Sad (But True) Story – Medication Costs Increase 25.4% in 2010

“The total amount spent on MS medications increased 25.4% from 2009-2010.  The amount had increased 34.4% from 2008-2009 and 18.3% from 2007-2008.  The result is an amount spent in 2010 on MS medications which is double what what spent in 2007.  Double in three years.  If forecasts are correct, the amount spent on MS drugs will more than double again in three years.Much of this increase is due to an increase in the price of each medication.  The price for Copaxone was increased 19% according to the 2010 Drug Trend Report, while utilization for MS drugs is actually decreasing slightly.  It is not expected that the introduction of new medications will cause prices to go lower and we’ve seen this already with the introduction of Gilenya in September 2010.  The market response to Gilenya’s $48,000 price tag was an increase in price of other MS medications, not a decrease (see The Rising Price of MS Disease-Modifying Medications)

I just wonder if this racing train will ever slow down.
This abstract is taken from Lisa Emrich’sarticle “MS Medication Costs Increase 25.4% in 2010”.

The answer to this last question of course is that the race will never slow down as long as the healthcare system all over the world is based on profits. No reasearch is willing to really solve the problem but all are more than willing to just moderate it and continue to sell their products. Especially when we are in the middle of an economic crisis and the profits need to find new ways of speculation. Health has nothing to do with profits as well as other areas of human activity.
That is exactly the reason why the term “patient” is always follwed by the term “consumer” and of course the latter is always the challenge…
